A recent report shows that Texas homebuyers are more diverse and earn higher incomes than the national average.

The data comes from the Texas REALTORS Texas Homebuyers and Sellers Report for 2021, which compared incomes and analyzed demographic information for national homebuyers who bought a home between July 2019 and June 2020.

“The increase in household income is encouraging as well as the broader base of diversity in homebuyers,” Marvin Jolly, 2021 Chairman of Texas REALTORS said in a company press release. “Even with higher income levels, buyers are experiencing one of the most challenging markets in history right now, as the supply of homes for sale in most areas of Texas is extremely low.”

The report found that the percentage of homebuyers who identified as Hispanic/Latino (18%, up from 14% the previous year), Black/African American (7% up from 5%) or Asian/Pacific Islander (6% up from 4%), rose during the analyzed time period with White/Caucasian homebuyers falling from 78% to 69%.

At $112,500, Texas homebuyers had a higher median household income than the U.S. average ($96,500).

The median sales price was $70,000 more than what sellers originally paid for the homes, and the average selling time for homes was four weeks.

According to the report, the average age of Texas homebuyers was 48, down from the age of 52 the previous year.

Most Texas homebuyers were married couples (68%), followed by single females (15%), single males (9%) and unmarried couples (6%), while matching the national average as first-time homebuyers (31%) with most in the state purchasing a single-family home (89%).
