The Texas General Land Office (GLO) disaster recovery team celebrated the completion of two multifamily housing complexes replacing affordable rental housing damaged by Hurricane Harvey, a press release said.
The GLO awarded The Oaks at Brenham, a 10-unit affordable rental complex in Brenham, $2.466 million to rebuild in addition to awarding a 36-unit multi-family community named Marquis at Fayette a total of more than $8.7 million to build units for low- to moderate-income families. According to the release, 95% of all units between both locations will be guaranteed for low to moderate-income families.
GLO was able to award more than $11 million to the two projects from the $588 million grant from the Community Development Block Grant for Disaster Recovery (CDBG-DR) funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to help reconstruct and construct 80 multi-family complexes throughout 48 eligible counties throughout the state, the release said.
According to the release, in total, 6,002 rental homes are to be rebuilt and nearly 80% are guaranteed to house low to moderate-income residents for at least 20 years after the project's completion, or 15 years after the completion of repairs on a complex, depending which complex needs what.
A family is considered to be low- to moderate-income if they earn 80% or less than the Area Median Family Income (AMFI) and applicants for the funding are required to designate at least 51% of their units for families that fit within this 80%, the release said.
