Property taxes can be intricate, which is why Texas REALTORS created a campaign that will guide Lone Star State residents to better understand the topic.

The campaign is called "What to Know: Property Taxes 101," and covers basics such as where tax rates are set and what public infrastructures taxes support, told by KVUE ABC.

"What our association is doing is trying to reach people where they are and educate them through infographics and social media videos on our website that teaches people the very basics," Texas REALTORS Director of Advocacy Communications Jamie Lee said, told by KVUE ABC.

The campaign comes after the Texas legislature passed a law in 2019 that requires county governments to be more transparent about property taxes.

Know Your Taxes reported that property tax monies are used to fund community services such as public schools, infrastructure projects, police and fire departments and other local services.

The tax rate is determined by the value of someone's home and the tax rate that is set annually by elected officials, county commissioners and city council members. For example, if someone has a $250,000 assessed value combined with a $0.025 tax rate that is set by county officials, their annual property taxes would equal $6,250.

According to KVUE ABC, the county websites will include features that allow residents to view how proposed property tax rates affect their bill, a section where residents can submit comments to county officials and tax entities and view when and where local taxing entities hold public hearings that set tax rates.

"An important component for all Texans to know is that you absolutely have a voice in the process," Lee said, told by KVUE ABC. "They can just visit knowyourtaxes.org, select your county, and you'll instantly get access to the information you need to determine your property tax bill."

KVUE ABC reported that Texas REALTORS recently polled Texans and found that reducing property taxes was a top concern for respondents, under economy and healthcare.
