HBO and Netflix have recently leased spaces in central Texas in order to film projects in the area, according to a report by the Austin Business Journal.
While Netflix will reportedly film in East Austin, HBO will utilize a building in Kyle to store costumes and other props for a true-crime series filming in Lockhart, approximately 17 miles away, according to the Houston Chronicle.
"Film has been very important to Lockhart over the years," Mike Kamerlander, Lockhart economic development director, told the Austin Business Journal. "Films like 'Waiting for Guffman,' 'The Newton Boys,' 'Transformers 4' and recent productions like Netflix’s 'Plus/Minus' have all used Lockhart as a large part of their production."
Kamerlander also noted this was not HBO's first time filming in Lockhart, noting that the network filmed the series "The Leftovers" in the small town in 2016.
"These productions all see Lockhart’s charm, beauty and film friendliness as assets when choosing a location," Kamerlander stated. "Lockhart is truly welcoming to film production and will continue to help facilitate projects as they become interested due to the economic impact these productions bring to the town’s businesses."
HBO will lease a 110,000-square-foot facility at Kyle Crossing, a 40-acre multi-tenant industrial business park located at 1980 Kohlers Crossing that is now completely leased, according to the paper.
Netflix will reportedly lease about 20,000 square feet in East Austin, using the property at 2008 Alexander Ave. for 12 to 18 months of production for a metro Austin production.
Additional information regarding the projects, such as the title or the cast, has not been released.
