The Alamo Trust is harnessing a $25 million investment by Bexar County for redevelopment and expansion of the landmark's visitor's center, according to information on its website.

The Crockett and Woolworth Buildings that provide the entrance into the visitor center and museum are being redeveloped as the entire complex is being expanded to more than 100,000 square feet.

Designers of the project are San Antonio-based Gensler and GRG Architecture. Redevelopment and expansion are expected to be completed in 2025.

The trust already has received the investment from Bexar and is seeking other support as well, Alamo Trust executive director Kate Rogers said on the website.

"We plan on working with stakeholders across the city, county and state to ensure that there is a historically accurate narrative that tells the complete story of the site. This narrative will inform all future exhibit design and interpretation," Rogers said. "Our goal is to create a visitor experience that is truly worthy of the Alamo and the rich, diverse cultural heritage of our community."

Rogers was selected as executive director in March.

The Alamo Trust is dedicated to the remembering of those who lived, fought and died at the Alamo during the 1836 battle there as a defining moment in Texas independence and its history.

About 32,000 square feet of the $130 million changes will be dedicated to museum galleries and programming, more than tripling the current 10,000 square feet of exhibit space. The improved Alamo Exhibit Hall and Collections Building will bring the total exhibit space to more than over 42,000 square feet.

The current Alamo Hall/Annex, which now has only about 1% of the Alamo Collection artifacts on display, is expected to be transformed into an education center that will include distance learning opportunities and guest lecture space.

The designers estimates that the completed Alamo Visitor Center and Museum will create $12 billion in economic benefits, more than 8,100 jobs and more than $600 million in tax revenue during the first five years of reopening. The data is based off pre-pandemic Alamo attendance numbers.
