Cheaper real estate in Texas that has expanded over the last few years has effectively begun luring Californians to Texas.
As the two most populous states in the country, Texas and California are two of the biggest real estate draws, but new census data has shown that Texas's cheaper housing costs have been more effective in bringing in new state residents than California, according to Axios Austin.
"I think people should stop moving from California to Texas because then they’ll ruin Texas, too," said Twitter user Ang in a tweet.
Now, since the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, Californians have been moving to Texas en masse, with around 50,000 California residents moving to Texas each year even before the pandemic began, according to Axios Austin.
People aren't the only things moving to Texas, with corporations and organizations also setting up new headquarters in the state.
Tech company Tesla moved its headquarters from California to Texas in order to escape the relatively high taxes and living costs of living in California. Following his company, Tesla CEO Elon Musk himself relocated from California to Texas in December 2020, according to Reuters.
Texas is one of the fastest-growing states in the U.S., gaining two congressional seats in the latest Census, while California is growing slower and lost two districts, according to Axios Austin.
