Whole Food Market Inc. is expanding its operations by building a distribution center in Manor to take advantage of growing arterial roads for faster restocking of customers’ favorite foods.

This decision surprises Manor locals.

“Whole Foods distribution center in Manor…. Manor is a suburb,” Mark Garza wrote in the Manor People Facebook group.

The project is worth $20 million, with construction beginning in January 2022.

“The center will include distribution and warehouse space, an administrative area, refrigeration and an outdoor area for members,” a release said.

The project is expected to be completed by March 2023.

The company is headquartered in Austin, and it's one of Austin’s largest and most prominent local companies.

The distribution center is close to where the Tesla factory is also in construction.

The Austin Business Journal reported there’s another distribution center on 840 Interchange Blvd. in East Austin, the lease for which ends in March 2023. The publication adds it’s “unclear” if the upcoming facility is replacing the existing center.

It is also unclear how many centers the company has, the publication reported.

Manor has been seeing population growth thanks to State Highway 130; that attracted Tesla to the area in the first place. FedEx Corp. also set up shop in Manor for similar reasons, the Austin Business Journal reported.
