A technology-focused real estate brokerage company that has offices in Austin is celebrating a victory brought about in Louisiana, in which the Attorney General’s office said that real estate rebates are legal in that state.
REX-Real Estate Exchange Inc. has been advocating for real estate rebates in several states. The rebates allow homebuyers to receive money back when they close on homes, a press release said. The recent victory REX realized came after the Louisiana Attorney General’s office clarified the legality of real estate rebates in response to REX’s opinion request.
“These (anti-rebate) policies harm consumers and licensed real estate agents alike with their anachronistic anti-consumer standards,” REX CEO Jack Ryan said in a letter, according to the release. “Based on the National Association of Home Builder’s Priced Out model, a 2% real estate buyer’s rebate would enable over 700,000 Americans to enter the home ownership market.”
Louisiana joins 41 other states and the District of Columbia which allow cash rebates, the press release said. States prohibiting real estate commission rebates are Alabama, Alaska, Iowa, Kansas, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma, Oregon and Tennessee.
Created in 2015, REX uses artificial intelligence and “big data” to help buyers and sellers of residential real estate at one-third the cost, REX’s website said.
“We use data modeling and machine learning to match sellers and buyers of homes as accurately and speedily as possible on Zillow, Google, Facebook and more,” REX’s website said. “And by doing that, we can reduce costs for all involved - REX covers both sides of the transaction with a total seller fee as low as 2.5%, instead of the 5-6% traditional agents charge.”
