The only house in Houston designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright is on the market, and the sellers are asking $3.15 million for the iconic Bunker Hill-area residence.

Wright designed more than 1,000 structures through the first half of the 20th century and his designs became renowned for the way they combined simple elegance and blended harmoniously with the land surrounding them, a Wikipedia report noted.

The house was built in 1955.

A quote from Wright on the website dedicated to him at Franklloydwright.org said, "The mission of an architect is to help people understand how to make life more beautiful, the world a better one for living in, and to give reason, rhyme and meaning to life.”

“This Usonian era home from Wright displays his approach to building focus on natural surroundings, generous overhangs and cantilevered carport,” a listing on Houstonbesthome.com said, “Located in Bunker Hill on a gated lot, this mid-century modern property includes a 1995 addition by Kirksey Architecture featuring contemporary, sun-filled interiors, large family room, inviting central courtyard and pool.”

A report in the Star-Telegram said the house has five bedrooms, 6.5 bathrooms and over 8,000 square feet of living space. The house sits on a 51,000-square-foot lot.

The report said Wright’s connection to Texas was given a boost by the recent sales of properties designed by his apprentice architect, John Covert Watson of Austin. These include a holiday retreat structure in Spicewood and a mushroom-shaped house near Travis Lake.

Photos of the Wright house in the Star-Telegram report display the architect's admiration for functional and modernistic, yet simple, design with lots of window space to let in sunlight.

According to a CHRON report, Wright also built and had installed some of the home’s built-in furniture, though some of the original pieces had been removed from the property. The house was originally called the “William Thaxton House,” named for the Houston insurance salesman for whom it was built.
